
I love a good brownie. To me, they offer one of the best returns on a time and effort investment in the baking world. There is usually no butter to soften, no sink full of dirty bowls, no long hours to wait for them to be ready to eat. You decide you want brownies? You can be eating them in under an hour with very little mess.

Recently, I was lucky enough to receive a copy of Max Brenner’s new book, Chocolate: A Love Story. Having enjoyed visiting one of his shops in New York, I was anxious to try out some recipes. Actually titled “A philosophical highly concentrated fudge brownie,” this chocolate extravagance cried out from the book’s pages to be made as soon as possible. Who am I to argue?

Recently, I was shocked to discover that there are people who have never had a homemade brownie. I can’t even imagine. Of course, they’d had brownies made from a mix, but none that were truly homemade. Having shared these brownies with them, I have been assured that they are now completely spoiled. Boxed brownies will never quite measure up again.

For my recent birthday, I received Tish Boyle’s The Good Cookie. This book is packed with a good variety of cookies in all shapes and sizes. It seems not quite right that the first recipe I made from this book is not a cookie at all, but these wonderfully rich brownies. However, having sampled these brownies, I stand by that decision.

In my younger years, I was a big fan of those little cookie shops in the mall. While others went for the giant cookies and even those double doozies, I was much more likely to go for the cheesecake brownies. It’s hard to say no to a combination of cheesecake and chocolate.
