Dark Victory Brownies

Dark Victory Brownies

For my recent birthday, I received Tish Boyle’s The Good Cookie. This book is packed with a good variety of cookies in all shapes and sizes. It seems not quite right that the first recipe I made from this book is not a cookie at all, but these wonderfully rich brownies. However, having sampled these brownies, I stand by that decision.

Much like that wonderful cake Quinn made for my birthday, these brownies are made with sour cream. Ms. Boyle writes that she wanted to make brownies using sour cream because of how much she likes sour cream in chocolate cake. I couldn’t agree with her more, so choosing this recipe was a no-brainer.

Dark Victory Brownies

These luscious brownies have a delightful, cake-like texture. They are over-the-top chocolate, which is always a plus for me. While I used pecans, these could be made with a different nut (like hazelnuts) or with none at all (for you chocolate purists).

I bought this book because of the photo on the cover! It has great recipes (how did I miss these brownies, though?)

This looks like a recipe for me! My boyfriend is a cakey-brownie fan. He’s an oddball, that one.

But how does it come out so cakey with only a half cup of flour?? Are they very thin?

I’ll be sure to try this one out. :)

I agree with the chocolate and sour cream combination. Both ingredients bring out the best of both flavors. Are there a good amount of recipes in that book?

Yum! Did you make up the name of “Dark Victory” or is that really the name? Either way, I love it!

I am normally not a fan of the cake like brownie, I normally go for the fudgie type…HOWEVER, after seeing this…I might convert to cake!:)

Dark Victory is a good name for these luscious cake like brownies.

    Thanks, everyone!

Jennifer, they are not thin. Not overly thick, but definitely not thin.

Amanda, there are several great-looking recipes in this book. I’ve got my eye on more than I’ll probably ever get around to making. :-)

Nan, that is the “official name” of these brownies.

sour cream was the “secret ingredient” in my grandmother’s chocolate cake back in the day, but I guess it isn’t such a big secret anymore! It makes bake goods SO moist. yum!

  • 32 jennifer // Oct 20, 2008 at 6:01 pm

maris, that sour cream just does something magical to cakes and these brownies. Yum!

  • 33 elizabeth // Oct 21, 2008 at 4:04 am

I love this book! I haven’t made the brownies yet, but I am a huge fan of her triple ginger biscotti and the almond tea cakes. They are delicious!
